What Transmission is in my 85 TA?

Im new to these cars, and a total idiot on transmissions. I hate them. I bought an 85 Tans am about 2 weeks ago and lastnight the transmission blew up on me. Catastrophic failure. So Im assuming it be price to rebuild. Im also only into the car about $1000 and really cant afford to put too much into it. This car was just a good deal at the time. But im still broke. So my question is, what is my tranny and anybody have a soild working low mileage unit for sale cheap. And local. The data stickers were painted over by an aftermarket paintjob. The car is an 85 Trans Am 305 TPI. Im guessing its a 700r4 but I dont know. Any Help?

Re: What Transmission is in my 85 TA?

It would have come with a 700-R4.

No guarantee that's what's still there; but odds are pretty high, that's what it is. See here for eeeezy identification. http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...General-Motors

Everybody wants one of those "for cheeeeeep". And gasoline for $0.25 a gallon, and 600 HP, and 35 mpg, and a $250,000 a year salary for playing video games, and lots of attention from the opposite sex. We all want lots of stuff that ain't happenin. Like, somebody is going to pay $$$$$ for one of those, and take it out of their car and give it to you at a $$$$ loss. Good luck. Do you want one "for cheeeeeep", or would you rather have one that works? If you're only into the car for $1k, you should have PLENTY left over to take care of the kind of stuff that always happens when you buy something at a suspiciously low price. You get, at best, what you pay for. Meaning, you pay less than it's worth, you get, at best .... you do the math.

I got a one. I broke part of the bell housing though, but if you can weld it it should be fine. I dont know how many miles are on it. It came with an engine I bought but I don't need it. Where are you located? If your close and interested make me an offer.

Call your local tranny shops - NOT a brand name nation-wide chain retail tranny shop - but a good old Joe Blow's Tranny shop - and ask about where to get a used tranny at. Locally here, a used 700R4 can be had for about $300 with a 90 day warranty - might last 30 days, might last 30 years - but at $300 it's worth a shot. AND - no core, meaning you keep your bad tranny and can have it rebuilt in the meantime to be good as new (when the funds are available of course).
