Not shifting/feels like neutral

Alright, finally got the car on the road, and something is wrong. I haven't personally gotten it out on the road, but my uncle has, and this is how he described the problem.

He said that while the car would launch in first gear (while in OD) it wouldn't shift to second, and when he let off the gas, it would feel like it would go into neutral.

I thought it might be the TV cable, so I'll try to adjust it more tomorrow, but I wanted to know what you guys thought.

Re: Not shifting/feels like neutral

Is the 383 in your sig that's just been attached to your stock 700R4?

If so, and you didn't rebuild the 700R4 between the 305 and the 383, welcome to a rebuild! I had the same issue - everything was fine with the wimpy 305 (tranny shifted fine) - the second the 350 was attached, it slipped so bad I didn't think I was going to make it 2 blocks back to the driveway.

Re: Not shifting/feels like neutral

I rebuilt the tranny before attaching the motor to it. The motor it had before wasn't a 305, it was a 350. I'd romp on the gas with the 350 and it always shifted fine before the rebuild.

This was the first run on the engine+rebuilt tranny, could it be that the fluid hasn't circulated well enough?

Re: Not shifting/feels like neutral

Welcome to my world ! I'm dealing with a tranny that sounds very much like your problem. Here's how I described it on another forum.....

I'm Screwed.......

The Tranny is F'd; At least I think it's F'd.

Last night I pulled the car from the driveway; It's the first time the car has been put on the street since I've owned it. It would not upshift. The tranny did not stay "in gear" so to speak as there was no engine braking..... Rev the car to 4000 then let off the gas and the RPM's drop but engine braking did not occur. Once the gas was pushed down again the RPM's would increase ( with no increase in speed ) until the engine speed = the rolling speed of the car - at which time the driveline would lock in sync and the car would speed up with RPM's again. From a dead stop: When on the gas the engine speed increases the speed of the car,..... It doens't "slip" out of gear when attempting to upshift - It simply doesn't upshift. If I were to call it "slipping" than it would be described as occuring AFTER letting off the gas. ( because rolling speed drops off slowly but engine RPMs fall right off. )

I re-set the tranny kick down cable for the ride back but nothing changed. I've run cars without the kick-down cable attached in the past and that results in th car staying in first, but the driveline remains 'locked' under that condition; meaning the engine RPMs and the rolling speed were always in sync.

Once I got the engine running again last week I found it was low on fluid and added what I had left. It's possible that it needs a bit more fluid, but I do not believe it's related. After previous engine installations I've run cars without enough fluid and the results are usually a car that will not go into any gear. Right now it has no trouble shifting into first and reverse....... It's simply not upshifting. Because the car has always been yard driven - I've never used 2-4th.

The way I see it I have 3 options.

1- re-set the kick down again. (already done) The adjustment this time was much more significant than the last time. I have not attempted to drive the car yet to test the results of the adjustment. I'll re-check the fluid level before the next test drive.

2 - Remove Kick Down cable at the tranny to ensure it's connected. Sure, it's bolted in place, but it's possible - however unlikely - that the cable is not connected to the hook/rod in the tranny.

3 - Drop the tranny and replace with another (untested) unit.

Seems like this might be more than 1 problem. If the fluid levels are correct than the Tranny and the TC might both have issues. This Engine Tranny were original to the car and were removed so a 350 could be installed. He planned to re-use the tranny and I bought the car as a failed project.

As of now I have added additional fluid ( a bit too much ) and have made a "From Zero" adjustment of the TV cable. Have not put it back on the road yet - but I'm not feeling confident that these adjustments will help. I'll post once I can put it back on the street !
