T5 to T56 swap

Will someone please tell me what parts I need to get in order to swap out my T5 to a T56? Is this a pretty straight forward swap with an existing manual shift car?

Re: T5 to T56 swap

It's very straightforward if you use a trans from an LT1 car. You'll need these from the donor:

trans, bellhousing, clutch assembly, flywheel, clutch hydraulics, clutch fork & T, slave cylinder spacer, shifter, shifter boot (the one that bolts to the floorpan,) torque arm mount

You'll also need a swap-specific crossmember. Hawks and Spohn make nice ones.

It's mostly a bolt-in swap, with the exceptions being that the shifter opening in the floorpan needs to be extended toward the rear, and you'll have to do some adaptation to get the speedo to work. There are a couple of different ways to go about that, just run some searches. You can use your stock pedal assembly by adapting the new slave cylinder and pressure hose to your factory master cylinder. You just have to file down the ridge at the tip of the steel fitting on the end of the hose.

Jaxom basically covered it, but here's a full, detailed write up.

I really recommend it. The T56 is kind of picky about 3rd gear, gotta jam it just right, but if you have the driver mod, it's a beautiful transmission. This is a video I had a friend record of my T56 swapped '01 GT about an hour ago. Obviously not the same car, but still the same great trans. It's nice knowing that after 4th gear, I can still pull a little more, instead of being knocked down by the original TR3650 5 speed's .67 5th.

Although I don't really like the GM overdrive gears for the T56. They're pretty steep compared to the Cobra T56, with a .79 5th gear and .63 6th. It makes pulling from around 120-150 in 5th gear pretty easy, since I'm more into roll racing and top end speed, and still an awesome .63 6th for a highway gear. Even with my 3.73s I do 70 at I believe exactly 2,000.
