looking for input.. do i need a rebuild?

so i finally got my maro on the road today, i took if for a ten mile drive as a test. it went fine on back roads at first, then i took it on the highway for the way back. but after i let the car sit before i took it home, it would rev way up like 4k r's before shifting, it did this through every gear, and would shift very hard every time. for the record its a carbd 305 backed by a 700r4. any comments or suggestions are welcome if anyone can help it would be appreciated!

you say you finally got it back on the road. so how long was it sitting for? when cars site for awhile the torque converter tends to drain back into the transmission. eventually leaking out. it could be low on fluid. id check that. Vehicle needs to be warmed parked on a level surface with the car running in park. Should be in the crosshatch area on the transmission dipstick which is located on passenger side of engine compartment toward rear. Good luck. If not, have you messed with the carburetor? you TV cable could be misadjsuted google tv cable adjustment and try yourself or have a transmission guy do it.

that's the issue. You can try some white shepherd for tranny's and see if it softens up the seals and rubber. It's worth the $10-$15 before tossing a basic rebuild kit at it.

I had the same problem with a Th200c. idk if the difference in style of transmission would matter much. anyways, i had to do a rebuild, there were springs and gear pieces everywhere when the pan came off haha, its a miracle my trany lasted as long as it did with so many loose parts. might wanna take a look in there or have a good shop do it. good luck

Re: looking for input.. do i need a rebuild?

thank you for the ideas, im going to give the sheperds a shot along with a new filter and change the fluid again, hopefully its not the same case though. i'm just trying to find anything that i can do that may help before a rebuild or replace is necessary, from in my reading here i noticed most will say the series 1 700r isnt really worth the effort in rebuilding. i will give it a shot and let you guys know, thanks again for your suggestions!

Re: looking for input.. do i need a rebuild?

The 700 is worth rebuilding there are a lot of racers use them and of course street rods. You can get it to hold up to 750 hp with a 9-10" converter. Not to mention they have a very low first gear to get you off the line and a .70 overdrive for cruising and keeping the RPM's down. But you do want to start with a 88 and up unit.
If built with the right upgrades this trans will last for years of fun.

But before you do a rebuild the tv valve could be stuck. Idle the car at 1000-1200 and with your hand pull the tv cable from under the hood 20-30 times a lot of the times it will come unstuck. From sitting the shift valves could be sticking a little too. The only thing that I have ever used in one is the Lubegaurd in the red bottle. You can get it from Napa. Before pulling the tranny I would change the fluid and filter fill it with fresh fluid and two bottles of lubgaurd. That could very well fix the problem and save you some money.
Hope that this helps
Rob
