Re: will not shift into 3rd

I'll assume this is a 700r4. Don't push it you can burn out the clutch bands. I'd recommend calling probuilt automatics on Monday. Dana should beable to help you troubleshoot it.

Re: will not shift into 3rd

do you have enough fluid in it?

is the tv cable set?

chances are high that it's not either

welcome to a very common failure in the 700r and 4l60

your 3/4 clutch is gone and it's time to rebuild

it's old and tired.

Too late for that now... luck done run out on ya.

No, wouldn't help; not even if that trans had one.

any trouble shooting tips?
Yup... when you get the trans out and torn down, check the lip seals around the direct clutch piston, both the inner and outer ones. That's probably the most likely culprit.

Yup... that's what they do. When it shifts into 3rd, that clutch is supposed to be engaged, and all the others are not. Ergo, if there's no 3rd gear clutch, you're in neutral at that point.

Basically, time for a rebuild.

Now would be a GREAT time to acquire a marketable skill. Instead of being terrified of auto transmissions, tackle it and master it. They're not that hard; just some mechanical stuff that moves around, not hard at all. Once you get past the "it's too hard I don't understand it I gotta pay somebody else out the a$$ to do it for me I can't afford it can't I just put in a Turbo 350 anybody got a junk one cheap can I use one outta a S-10" kind of mode, you'd be surprised how much LIFE progress you could make.

Go here http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/me...ode=4L60-700R4 get you a kit and the ATSG manual (the best in the business), and be proud of what YOU can accomplish.

Re: will not shift into 3rd

If you are a gambler then you could do a minimalist fix.
Pull the trans pan and check for metal
Pull the trans
Pull the 2-4 servo
Stand the trans on its rear with the output shaft having no pressure
Measure the end play and pull the pump.
Pull the reverse and input drum.
Check the forward clutch and 3/4 clutch - probably a smoked 3/4 pack
Install the 3/4 clutches, drums, pump, servo and be back on the road

Order up the 3/4 cluthes & steels, 2-4 band, paper & rubber kit or just lip seals/pump gasket/pump bolt gaskets, filter kit. If you pre-ordered betting that just the 3/4 clutches were bad then you could disassemble and reassemble in less than an hour and fix for less than $100. Take pictures upon disassembly and measure the clutch clearances.
