Rear axle and Tranny Question
Rear axle and Tranny Question
I have an `88 IROC-Z project that I am putting in a ZZ4 and Pro-charger super charger. I am wanting to put in a T-56 tranny with a Corvette rearend. Is that possible and what kind of a rearend does a corvette use? Pleae let me know so that I can get the right stuff, and let me know if that fits and/or works. Thanks.

Use the search function.
The T56 swap is common. Trying to install a Corvette rear end isn't but with enough time and money, any swap is possible. There's a good thread on the installation of a C4 differential. This is not within the ability of the average person. You will need some fabrication skills to make it work.
As for any other diff, the only diff that will be an easy swap into a third gen is one from another third gen or from a fourth gen. Your only other easy swaps is with a direct bolt in aftermarket diff. Dana 60, Ford 9" or Chev 12 bolt are you options and a typical swap is in the $2000 range depending what options you use.

Re: Rear axle and Tranny Question
Ok. That helps. I was looking at a Dana 44 but would the Dana 60 be better? I don't know a whole lot about difs and rear ends. This is actually a learing process for me as well.

THE FIRST thing you need to do, is to put your car up on a lift, and CAREFULLY and THOUROUGHLY study how the suspension works; then put ANY OTHER CAR up on a lift, and notice the differences. Note specifically how these cars use a torque arm, which acts somewhat like upper control arms do in a 4-link rear setup, to keep the rear from rotating. No other chassis uses the same setup and therefor no other rear will swap into these cars without SIGNIFICANT modification of SOMETHING, either the car or the rear.
The Vette rear suspension in particular is of a RADICALLY DIFFERENT design from these cars. While not "impossible" to install, it's not the sort of thing you learn how to do from forum posts, any more than you would learn to operate on a brain tumor that way. Search this forum for terms like "IRS" and "independent rear suspension" to view a couple of people's description of some of the things they went through to do this. It's in that class of things where if you have to ask, it's probably not for you.
The best bet for a T-56 swap is probably the one from a 94-97 Z28 or Trans Am. Read the sticky at the very top of this forum to get an idea of what's involved. It's been discussed in exhaustive detail countless times already, not much point in posting all that stuff yet again.
