on with the new story

So as some of you may know, our 89 RS was totaled recently thanks to two things a) old lady b) backing out of driveway across the street. Long story short it was claimed a total loss and we are now into a beautiful 84 Z28 HO. While the car is twice the car the RS was, I have some issues to deal with. First off, the transmission is leaking. As far as I know this is a 700R4 on a L69 305. Now, when we did the test drive (around the block a few times) we notice no leaking. Prior to our test drive, it had been sitting for a number of months. Prior to its transport up here, it had been sitting even longer. From what I can tell, it starts leaking when it gets up to normal operating temperature and goes away when it cools down. When I peek underneath, I can see drops forming (very slowly) at passenger side/rear of pan, passenger side/front of pan. I have not seen anything drivers side...yet. Also, this is the only place I see trans fluid leaking ( I have other leaks to contend with but this appears to be the only trans fluid leak spots). I am inclined to think it is not a front or rear input seal. More likely a pan gasket, tc seals, check tube or a combination of all. I have an appointment at AAMCO on Wednesday as a buddy of mine works there and can get me free lift time and a free "this is what's wrong". With that I intend to fix "what's wrong". Yes, I know....AAMCO is crap and believe I won't let them be doing anything but give input as to "what they find". I'll be doing all the fixing myself.

So..my question is..what else could it be that I am missing? Has this happened to you pretty much exactly? What did you find/do?

Also..this is probably off topic for this forum but I'm not sure where to jack this thing up where I to get under myself and start peeking. She's a rust monster with a lot of restoration ahead of us but omg...she is worth it.

Re: on with the new story

Congrats on the L69 buy. A friend of mine in h.s. had a white/blue 84 that ran tip-top as he bought it from a mechanic. He still misses that car.

If it's leaking at the pan rail and nowhere above that, get the black spongy gasket (delco/dealer) and install it dry. Put a straightedge on the pan to see if there's deformation of the pan rail and check for dirt / old sealer or RTV or damage at the bottom edge of the case. If the new gasket fails to fix, get a good or new pan.
