I have a 700r4 for sale an I can't for the life of me tell which one it is. Is there a casting number site that would be able to tell me?

The Transmission came out of an 86-88 Pick up truck, 2 wheel drive 1500 series. Leaving me to wonder if its the better one of the two 700's that where out in the 80's

So can can someone pleas direct me to a casting site which will help me put mystry to rest?

700R4 and 4L60 are the same trans, just different names. GM changed how they called em. The 87-92 trannys have a "saint louis arch" cast in the case around the cooler line fittings, earlier units do not. If the electrical plug is on the passenger side, and it has no TV cable hole (some people call it a 'kick down cable' (which it is not), it is a 4L60E which they partially rolled out in '92 and up. You could also look at the numbers stamped in the pan rail on the passenger side rear where the pan meets the case, the first number is the year it was built. A 1-6 without the 'arch' is an 81-86, a 6 up to a 2 WITH 'the arch' would be an 86 - 92. And the ones with 'the arch' have better internal parts than the older ones, thus more desirable.

It has 2 sets of numbers on it..
The main body stamp has the #8663548
The Stamp on the left rear right about the oil pan is #9MXM236H

 

that would be an '89 MXM. I haven't found a chart to tell me what it came out of, but MXM is the calibration -- springs in the valve body, governer weights, wiring harness, ect. 236 is the day of the year it was built, and the H means it was built on the 2nd shift of the day. The 8663548 is probably the part number when it was made, a gm dealer might be able to tell you what vehicles that part number would fit, but I don't think they can tell you what it came out of -- unless it ONLY fits firebirds and camaros.

 

If is has three bolt holes going sideways through the tail housing, then it is a Camaro or Firebird. The type of governor you have will tell you if it is a high rpm (apx. 5,500 rpm WOT shift points), or a standard V-8 (apx. 5,000 rpm WOT shift points). If it is "plain Jane" tail housing with no sideways bolt holes, then it is most likely a van or truck and will have the standard V-8 governor.

 

Provided somebody hasn't changed the tail housing...
and I believe the 'vette tail has trans mount bolt holes cast in the bottom with no side-to-side holes in it. but all of the vette and f-body codes I found have the letter 'y' in them, so I'm betting it's a truck or big car trans...
