Re: Quick Posi Question

Alright...Calm Down I get it...
So my next question is if I find a posi unit from a 9 bolt and I don't like the gears are there some available to swap them out?

Re: Quick Posi Question

Yes there are best you can do are 373s. I have a 9bolt borg Warner in my GTA. I have looked high and low for a truetrac/ zexel torsen for it and truth be told you can't even find a stock replacement for the original limited slip. I'm still debating what I'm going to do. I assume you are not ready to pony up 1800 bucks for an aftermarket rear. I'm thinking about building brackets or transfering them off a junkyard ten bolt to a Dana 44 out of a jeep...

Re: Quick Posi Question

If you can improvise something unique with fab skills then by all means do it. The Ford 8.8s are good options.

Yukon makes gears for 9-bolts.

http://www.yukongear.com/PartsList.a...26+Pinion+Sets

If you buy from 9-bolt.com you can get a pretty wide range of gears:

http://www.9bolt.com/

But you'll have to pay to ship them across the largest ocean on earth. They do have nearly every 9bolt part imaginable, though.

Beyond the Yukon gears, Ratech has a lot of random odds and ends for the 9-bolt. They have shims, gaskets, bolts, nuts, bearings, seals, etc:

http://www.ratechmfg.com/toc.htm

You can also have the posi cones machined down, along with the carrier, to reset the posi so it grabs again. I'm not entirely sure of the details but a google search should turn something up. I think you have to find shims to shim the cones up to where they should be so they work properly, though. It's just an option you have available to you if you dont want to pay for new cones or a new carrier.

Also, beyond that, remember not only is there a massive expense in going to a 9 inch or a 12-bolt, they will sap horsepower too. That extra weight and strength causes more parasitic drivetrain loss.

If I ever break my 9-bolt Im just gonna go to a 10-bolt until Im hitting 11's. I can break several 10-bolts before I get anywhere near the cost of a 9 inch.

I know of a posi unit in St. Louis with rear disc setup - 2.77 that is going ot be parted very soon.. maybe this weekend. Probably worth your 2 hour drive to get it if you are looking for one.

Re: Quick Posi Question

Actually, there IS an aftermarket LSD for the 9 bolt:

http://www.efihardware.com/products/...y-LSD-DAG-3820

All yours for the low price of $1300.

And before anyone tries to argue, this is for VL series Holden Commodores, which use the same 9 bolt center section that's under 9 bolt equipped third gens.

And why wouldn't you buy a whole aftermarket 12 bolt or 9 inch drop in for that?

Because a 9inch or 12-bolt will cause more drivetrain losses and lower rwhp and increase curb weight?

Not saying I think it's worth it, but there are advantages to having a smaller diff.

Re: Quick Posi Question

Depending on what you want to do, I bought a used 9 bolt rear with a 3 series carrier, rebuilt it with a 3.70 gear, new bearings and seals, for under $900. Thats with getting new cones from 9bolt.com also. I bought a used 9 bolt rear and rebuilt it so I could also keep my old one with 45,000 and the 3.27 gear.

With new cones is it pretty much a "new" posi?

Re: Quick Posi Question

Thanks everyone, my spider gears exploded I think cause my rear sometimes locks sometimes doesn't and one wheels...
It seems there are some options but for the price I think going the 9bolt.com route would work best for me...My car was originally '87 350TPI Iroc but now has a rebuilt 355 w/edelbrock rollin thunder 2204 cam and has a T5 Swap... I believe it came from the factory with 3.27 gears.... What would be a good choice to go up to? Keep the 3.27's, 3.45, or 3.73's? I was thinking 3.45's
Let me take this time to thank everyone in advanced...This site is been invaluable for me thru my different Irocs over the years! You guys are the best

As long as the carrier is in good shape, and you shim the cones with the right preload.
