i need a new transmission!!
I need help buying a new transmission and torque converter. my 1987 camaro iroc z28 currently has a 700r4 transmission. i rebuilt my engine and ended up going through two transmission last summer. i went through craigslist last year simply because i just needed to drive it. this year i got some extra money and would like to buy a decent transmission. im not looking to go crazy but would like to avoid the hit or miss transmissions off of craigslist. can anyone recommend either a website or company that provide quality transmissions at a reasonable price. i am looking for an everyday driver transmission. i currenlty have 350 engine.
are torque converts usually good to reuse with another transmission? how do i tell?
what do you need to know from me to size up what type of transmission and torque converter will suit my needs?
also what questions should i be asking when buying a new transmission?
anyone in the massachusetts area that is interested in two 700r4 transmissions? are definatley good for a rebuild. one is just taking up space and i would like to get rid of it and am not planning on a rebuild. the other is still in the car and will be removing in the next couple of weeks. i can take pics if necessary
ANY AND ALL HELP IS APPRECIATED. THANKS

Re: i need a new transmission!!
I've been there too with a old chevy truck I had. I went through two transmissions the cheap way and they only lasted a couple weeks. I finally bought another trans for 200 off clist that WORKED GREAT BEFORE IT WAS PULLED(so the listing said) and sold the truck for 600 immediately after I installed it. It wouldn't shift out of second and after some driving and fiddling with the tv cable and lucas trans fix it started to shift like normal. A week later the guy who bought called me and said the trans went out. I told him before he bought it that it has problems and 600 is scrap price for a truck that he drove home. Some people must think that you can spend 600 and get a reliable truck? The best bet is to spend the money and get a new one or have one of yours rebuilt. No doubt its going to be over 1k but buying used ones off craigslist is like going to the junkyard and getting one there. You'll never know what its been through or how long it has sat around not being used. The worst thing to do to a trans is let it sit for a few years and never use it. the bands dry up inside the thing because the fluid hasn't been circulated and when u go to use it it only lasts a little while before burning up.

Oh ya, forgot to mention that I bought the truck for 400. Spent 700 in the used trannys and sold it for 600. You can see where cheap used trannys will get you. BROKE down and money wasted

Re: i need a new transmission!!
Id try to have someone with a reputable name in your area and have him rebuild it. Ask around first to see how he does business. Some guys a crooks and some are honest. Stay away from trannys that say (use b&m transmission fluid or some other high dollar fluid) because the components inside are not as good and there trying to make up for it by using high quality fluid. I like how my tranny guy who rebuilt mine said just put the cheap stuff in and Ill warranty it up to 500hp. It only cost me $650 for a my th350. He said 700r4s would be around $1200 for the same quality for him to rebuild it.

If i were going to just buy a refurbished 700r4 what info would they need/should i know when talking with them? are there different lengths to the 700r4 or is there just one standard size? when buying the torque converter what should i be looking for?
