I've got an automatic transmission, 1984 Z28, 700r4, with overdrive. If I put it in Drive, it seems to shift through 1 - 3 normally. But it won't go into 4 unless I manually push the stick into Overdrive. Conversely, if I start off with the selector in Overdrive, the engine just races. Seems that I can get Overdrive to work if I'm going at least 35 mph.
Anyone have this problem ? Anyone know enough about how the transmission works to guess why this is happening ?

What is the fluid level, & is it red or brown color?
Possible the torque converter is bad?

It shouldn't go into overdrive until about 45mph.

Hell we can make it go into OD at 10 mph but you will need a new tranny by the time you get back from your trip to the store to buy a pop.
