junkyard transmission
This week I'm going to the junkyard to try and find a replacement transmission for my third gen. What should I look for, what other cars/trucks transmissions are interchangable? The bad transmission is a 700r-4. I do want a 700r.

Re: junkyard transmission
mine came from a 1985 caprice, used f-bod tailhousing and put a shift kit in it-cost me $150"as is,you pull"in 1995-still going strong, was a great buy 700r4 started to appear on chevy v8 cars and trucks in 1982 and was upgraded in mid 1984 and again around 1987.I think 1993 was the last year for non-electronic control 700r4.

Re: junkyard transmission
I went to the junkyard today to do some research. I found a couple of transmissions i might be interested in. The ones Im interested in had 155k-178k miles on the odometer. I mean, I know that doesnt mean thats correct, but one can only dream right? So, They're both 92 model caprices. After doing some research I notice that in 1992 electronic controls were added to the trans.,designating them the 4l60e. and that (E) is a no go. Am I correct? or is there some way to make it work, without having to mess with the computer/ecu? or should i just keep looking?

Re: junkyard transmission
i poked around a little online and looks like caprice kept non-electronic 700r4 through 1993,some replacement transmissions for caprice were listed as fitting 1982-93.Very hard to judge condition of transmissions based on miles-tranny i got from 85 caprice had 110,000 miles and was in almost perfect condition, now has around 200,000 and was still in good shape when i had it apart about 2 yrs ago to muck out debris from thrust bearing failure of aftermarket converter i installed.I would consider those '92 caprice trannys if price is good-would need to install shift kit or transfer parts from original camaro tranny to get firmer shift etc. than caprice specs.
