tranny oil cooler size?

Hi Guys,

getting the car ready for the big motor swap. I've got my 383 built (lunati 60103 cam, Edelbrock Performer RPM heads and intake, 750 Holley Carb... stout enough street motor) Going with a 2400 rpm stall converter (suggested by lunati) and i'm running a rebuilt 700r4. I know I'll be heating up the trans fluid more than stock, so I came by a brand new oil cooler from GM at a reasonable price. the oil cooler is 7"x11"x1/2". Is this fairly standard? Do you think it will be good enough to cool the trans fluid for street and highway driving? It will be mounted to the front of the rad. Thanks, Ian

Re: tranny oil cooler size?

It depends....

If it's a tube and fin, I'd say no. If it's a stacked plate, I'd say you're good. Is that last measurement really 1/2"? Most coolers tend to be 3/4" or 1.5 in terms of depth.

I'm running a 12 x 11 x 3/4" size stacked cooler. (Long Tru Cool #LPD4490) It's an excellent converter. Mine is bolted to the frame about an inch in front of the A/C condenser. I can just barely fit my finger between. The air gap is nice because it minimizes a hot spot on your cooler (from hot radiator) or your radiator (from hot cooler).

All transmission coolers are cheap mods. And worth every penny. Get a good one.

Stacked plate is more efficient than tube and fin design. Spend the extra money for a stacked plate style.

Get a large cooler then run it inline with the factory cooler inside the rad.

A stacked plate is like an A/C parallel flow condenser in the picture below. Much more surface getting cooled at any given time.

The multiple 180° bends on a tube & fin cooler create heat.
