Same with third gen diffs. The diff itself is identical between V6, V8 etc. The only difference between them all was the gearing and if it was open, gov loc or posi. Strength wise, they're all the same.
A fourth gen diff with it's 28 spline axles is just as strong as a 90-92 third gen because they also had 28 spline axles. You can upgrade 82-89 10 bolts to 28 spline as long as you're using the proper carrier (posi)
The only advantage to upgrading to a fourth gen diff is to get and use a newer disk brake system.
