I just had my engine replaced and at the same time I had the tranny done and the rear end not only re-built but new gears. Thats alot I know. Driving it for the first time on the hwy I felt a little vibration but didn't think nothing of it cause the exhaust is touching. But just cruising at 70 then "BOOM" engine quit and I coasted off the road.
Well the bell housing broke all the way arround. Anyone have any ideas? It's a Vortec crate motor and I put the regular flywheel on it rather then buy a new starter. Other then that everything is stuff I've done several times befor.
The trans had 165k miles on it and was behind a gutless 305 TBI for that. So I don't think it was driven hard. It couldn't even spin the tires. I am in the process of tuning the EBL now so I haven't hot rodded it yet.
THANKS.
GREG

Re: Bell Housing broke
Ive had something similar happen but it ended up being the pilot bearing in the end of the crank that the input shaft on the tranny slides in and it was new!! Id check the driveshaft also and make sure its not bent because if you replace it and it happens again itll make you sick

Re: Bell Housing broke
a u-joint cap may have came off the tranny end of the driveshaft and caused sudden severe runout of the driveshaft, the massive imbalance breaking the bellhousing-that happened to a member here a couple years ago, totally demolished the tranny...

Re: Bell Housing broke
Loose bolts on the belhousing to block can cause it.
What motor mounts are you running?

Re: Bell Housing broke

If it's just the bellhousing and you can save the case, this is an option. Wasn't that hard to do at all. I did it in a day with an angle grinder. It is messy though...

don't know why yet.I am leaning twards something not done rite,. I had my mach rebuild every thing at once. It broke clean arround rite at the body of the tranny. Didn't spill a drop of fluid. Now I need a core but... first I want to know what happened.

Re: Bell Housing broke
A friend of mines 78 cutlass would bust bellhousings everytime he would jerk the front tires off the ground. That car twisted up like a pretzel..

Re: Bell Housing broke
so I deffently wasn't hot rodding. I think the U Joint thing sounds rite. There was vib befir it happened. My mach ain't going to atmitt to doing it. Do you think maybe the flywheel? I put the factory 305 flywheel on the 350 Vortec to save the starter.

Re: Bell Housing broke
Your fine in the flexplate area.
If you had a vibration before, whatever is causing it is most likely the problem.
Were the bellhousing bolts loose??

Re: Bell Housing broke
I have a 700r4 from an 82 4x4 diesel PU will it work as the doner. All the stuff in my tranny is still good. So far can't find the reason. Everything is good just look like it failed but that would be way to much of a fluke for me.

Re: Bell Housing broke
Well I really need your help. I found the torque converter is all busted up inside. So I got a core at the junk yard and will put the guts in it tomorrow. But it spins fine. I am not sure what caused the brake. So I'll order the converter as soon as I hear something.
