Opinions wanted: 2 Series 9bolt carrier and cone condition (pics)
So a while back i made the mistake of letting my cones wear out to the point that it completely screwed up the spider gears. Chipped teeth, rounded teeth, bad news. I have learned quite a bit since that day.
Question I have is, is this carrier salvageable? Can the cone that still has a little meat on it be milled or time to throw them away?
I have access to a mill and lathe for a limited time and just need to know if I should bother with them or not.
I have read the 9Bolt cone repair howto. I was looking for an opinion from someone who might have done this before.
Thanks

those are junk. New cones are in order and you will have to have the case halves machined for them since they do not have the recess that the stockers have, remove the raised portion in the carrier and it'll be fine.
I have machined a couple of these cones and shimmed them, I would not take them down a lot more than this:

Yours are worn down a lot deeper than the as cast section near the outer diameter, mine are a little higher still in the machined area
that's an added benefit to the replacement ones, a lot more spline contact area but like I said, need to machine case halves

Thanks Twin_Turbo!
Looks like ill be ordering new cones when needed. I will machine the case halves to accommodate for the new cones.
Question. Does the cone also need to be taken down a bit so it doesn't contact the case bottom (part you can see in the window?)
So I am kind of seeing this is just a poor design correct? The cones eat at the case half until eventually you run out of material and the whole unit becomes a giant door stop?
