Busted input drum? how did this happen?

Well my 88 has been down under going major swap surgery and we've gotten around to the transmission. I got a phone call from the tranny builder here in town and this is what he had to show me....

From the research I've done is that the input drum can be a weak link when bumping up the power in a 700R4 but my question is is how in the hell did it bust apart like this? Plus, the only strong replacement I've found is almost 500 dollars and on a national 2 month back order. So what can I do to solve this? HELP!!! lol

It happens once in great while. Not common though, and really not much you can do about it, unless you go with the Sonnax fix for this. I have had this happen twice on me over the last 20 years or so. As I said not very common.
