dreaded 700r4 post again.... What stupid thing am i doing wrong this time?
I looked thru a few threads and cant find and answer so here goes,
I installed a new TV cable now the shifts are way to high. I adjusted it and it shifts fine untill i give it a good bit of gas then it starts the high shifting (1st-2nd above 30mph) I look at the carb linkage and everytime i adjust it i notice it pushes the wire out a little so that it ends up loose? Is there any way to stop it from doing that?

it is possible the actual valve in the trans is sticking, I see that a lot, it will let the cable come out farther. With it running, pinch the cable with your fingers and pull it as far as you can, then let it snap back to original position without moving the throttle. Do that 5 or so times, see if it helps. if it does, the valve was sticking, but it might stick some more. I have had to remove it from the valve body and polish the valve itself....
why did you install an new cable in the first place??

Did you do the full process of checking the line pressure with the full procedure outlined in the GM repair manual? Unless you are following that exact procedure you may not have the correct setup even if you follow the TV accelerator pedal kick down process.
I did the kick down process a few times and it didn't dial in correct. I checked pressures, reset the TV cable a bit, checked pressures, adjusted TV cable a bit, etc. and finally got it dialed in perfectly.
Without checking the pressures it would not have been as good.

Checking line pressures is a royal PITA for the average do-it-yourselfer. You should be hearing some clicks when adjusting the cable in the typical manner. If you bought an aftermarket TV cable, that might be your problem. A lot of them are damn poor quality. About the best new replacement I've seen is the Pioneer brand ones. A lot of times, when I've adjusted mine using the gas pedal method, when I took it for a test drive, the shifts still felt just a bit off. Sometimes you need to go a click or two tighter or looser to get the shifts just right. Even though most people say never adjust it just by "feel", if you're used to how your trans usually shifts when it's right, you can tell when you get it set right. I've always done it just as described above, and haven't burnt up a trans yet! Btw, I had a major headache with my TV adjustment after installing a Super Ram intake. No matter how I set it, the shifts were off a bit. I finally discovered a shorter TV link on Ebay. I think PATC corp was who sells them. It's the linkage rod that goes between the plunger and the TV cable inside the trans. Once I put that in, I finally got the cable geometry just right on mine! However, if you're running a basically stock intake setup of some sort, you probably don't need the shorter link. Just need to get your existing setup adjusted properly.
