1985 Camaro 2.8 trans questions

Hello all. New here. My brother just bought his first car, a 1985 Camaro with a 2.8. It has an automatic trans. I believe it is a 700r4 if I am not mistaken. I'm a Ford guy so I apologize if I have no clue what I am saying when I comes to these cars. So the car runs great, but need some work. The main issue is the transmission. It will not go past second gear at all. On top of that it takes quiet a lot of throttle to get it moving. My guess is either the TC slipping a lot, or the trans is on its way out. I am just lookin for advice. The plan is to remove the old trans and try a used one along with another used TC. Money is pretty tight for him. Thanks guys.

Re: 1985 Camaro 2.8 trans questions

Any one have any ideas? From what I have read it could either be the governor, TV cable, or the more likely bad 3-4 clutch pack. To add some more info here though. When shifting into any gear, it is a VERY firm shift. The trans will only shift into second under LIGHT acceleration. I basically have to lift off the gas for it to shift, or drive like an old man. It doesn't slip between any of the gears it goes into either. We did manage to get it into third once, however once in third it would not accelerate and applying more throttle only made it kick down to second. The shift to third was nice and firm however. Sounds like there might be some issues in the trans, but I want to get some input before we make any commitment towards a particular repair. Thanks.

No body has any ideas? I didn't want to fly blind into a swap, but looks like I might have to....

I'm not a pro.But did have a v8 that had about the same thing.Changed the tran and did great.make sure to reset the tv cable.OH, got plenty of tran fluid in it? Also I had a nova one time that the tran line going through the radiator was cloged.Check for kinks and blockage even in the radiator itself. Not alot of basic differances between ford and chevy. They have motors, burn gas,and break down.

I have already tried resetting the TV cable. I also took out the extra fluid that was in the trans so it is sitting at the right level. At this point I am trying to determine if it is the torque converter or the transmission. I took the tops off of it and rolled the windows down then took it for a spin. No change at all. I did notice a very slight grinding sound under load coming from either the trans or the TC. The sound is more of a mix of grinding and brake squeal, but not very loud... I will go ahead and check the lines to the radiator. Thanks for the reply.
