timken axl seal HELP
timken axl seal HELP
I just had my whole rear end rebuilt. Had motive 3.70 gears, raetech master overhaul kit, and timken set 9 bearings and seals. The guy I had Install everything was doing rear ends for years and by the look of his shop with over 500 rear ends leads me to believe he knows his stuff. I assured him I had all the right parts. I referenced the 9 bolt sticky post for the bearings and axl seals. Problem is.......I remember what the new seals looked like and saw the old ones pulled and they looked nothing alike. Actually the 2 old ones were identical. He was a little worried about it leaking and told me after its installed if it leaked bring it back. I would hate to have to put it All back In just to drive it 10 miles to pull it out again. I remember one new backing was black plastic and the other was metal and I believe green. Anybody install these timken ones that I am describing? Are they wrong?

Mine look the same. They are different seals and part numbers. You should be ok as long as you have the right seal on the right axle.

Re: timken axl seal HELP
Timken has something wrong with their part numbers for those seals and has for a long long time for the 9 bolt. I saw your title and knew it was in reference to these seals. Whats worse is that the one seal that was correct in that kit started leaking after only a few months for me.
Anyways the correct seals for a 9 bolt can be bought from Napa. They are part numbers

NOS 16542 (right)

Note: It is important to use the correct seal on the correct side. Switching them up and you will most likely have leaks from the direction of the slashes inside the seal to direct fluid back into the rear. Also...ive had these seals in my rear end for about a year or so now and no leaks.

Putting the seals in backwards will cause leaks. The information underneath is correct.
If you want to buy the RH timken seal from autozone, the part number is 710179
