Shift boot too taught?

Hey guys, my 89 formula has a 700r4 and the shift boot that is on it is wayy too tight to let me shift down to first to manually cycle through the gears. Like, the leather boot just doesn't have enough material to go down to first and it is completely taught and almost stretched when I try to go down to first, if you know what I'm trying to say.. Does anyone know a simple fix to this? Or would I have to buy a whole new boot for me to be able to shift manually?
