Gernaded diff, need advise
So it's not in my Camaro, but I figured the advise could be beneficial to others anyway, so here goes.
Driving my 85 K10 home the other night, and boom, rear tires stop spinning, truck spins out, long story short, 4wd got me the next 1/4 mile home.
Took the cover off, and found this. Pretty sure it used to be a gov loc, though I never noticed more than one tire spinning at a time so I'm assuming it hasn't worked right since I bought the truck.
What I want to know is how I should fix this? Should I just get a 'new' rear end out of a junk yard? Should I replace the differential in the rear I have? If so what should I buy? definitely going to be limited slip, though beyond that it'd have to be in-expensive and the quicker/easier to install the better.
I'm assuming its a 8.5," though I'm not positive. Not sure on the ratio either, I'll have to jack the front end up and spin it a few times to be sure, I'm assuming the front and rear have the same ratio. Definitely 28 spline axles. Looking for advise on what others would do in this situation. Thanks.

Anyone able to tell the ratio from these numbers on the ring gear?

40÷13=3.077 (we usually call it 3.08)
Not alot of sense in repairing that. Better to just get another. There's no shortage of them.

8.5 with 3.08 gears and a Governor Lock. If the ring & pinion gears are not damaged then replace the differential and go with it. http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19773 If you just drive on the street then use a Eaton Posi or Truetrac. If you go off road then use a Detroit Locker. Be sure to get Timken bearings and a super shim set for adjusting the backlash and bearing preload.
