85 V6 wont shift out of park.
The car was running and driving normally when I parked it after work, I went to go get a pack of smokes, and the car wont shift out of park. The shift **** moves, but nothing happens.

crawl under the car and see if the shifter cable snapped .which is more then likley what ahppened
be aware the autp parts stores replacement cables are absolute junk, u would be much better off buying a used gm cable from somone on here or from the junkyard

I wont be able to check it until the morning. If it is the cable can I replace it without having to drop the transmission?

Re: 85 V6 wont shift out of park.
inside the car u have to remove the shifter handle and the shift plate to get to the cable on the shifter , hope u have small hands cause theres not much room inside the console
if i recall corectly u need a 10mm socket , 13mm socket , torx bit for the shift plate , large flat blade screwdriver to remove the retianing clip from the shifter to trans cable connection
also grab a magnet and long needle nose pliers
if ur really lucky the nut that holds the cable to the trans linkage came off and alls u will have to do is get a new nut an reattach the cable but i highly doubt thats what happened
btw the shifter cable/linkage is on the driver side of the transmission
