I have a 90 Iroc w/350 TPI & a freshly rebuilt 700r4. I am having a weird problem with the tranny. It shifts good until it hits 4th gear. It will shift into 4th but as soon as it does the RPM's jump approx. 500 rpms...then it will drop about the same and finally jump again and stays high. So cruising at 50mph...my rpms are around 2500. I've never had it idle that high cruising at 50. At first I thought it was down shifting and going back to 4th but it's just the rpms that are jumping. It only started when I put the rebuilt tranny in...which came from Monster. Has anyone ever come across this problem or know what would cause it?
I would double check everything from wiring connections to fluid levels to TV cable (If equipped). Sounds like a "Lock up" issue.??
Wiring and fluid are both good. The TV cable is adjusted according to the manual. Is there any way to verify if it is the lockup?
First you would need to tie into the wire for the lock up signal and make sure the PCM is sending a signal to the trans to lock up. If it is then I would suspect an internal wiring issue or a faulty Lock up solenoid. You can OHM both and see if you find a problem in one of the two. I would probably suspect a bad lock up solenoid or trash stuck in the lock up valve. Did you flush the cooler lines and cooler?

What should the lockup solenoid ohm out to? The trans cooler and lines are brand new...and as far as I can remember there wasn't any trash in them when I installed them.
I do have the old lockup solenoid out of the other tranny I took out.
Might want to let Monster know what is going on before you think of cracking their unit open....
I actually called them this morning and asked them about it...they want me to test line pressure first before anything else. Since I don't have a pressure gauge yet...figured I would see what you guys thought. Probably should have asked if I did troubleshoot it would it void the warranty?
If I drove it like this...would it cause any damage to the tranny?
With no lock up (assuming this is what your problem is) yes. It can overheat the trans on the highway and burn it up.
They will want a licensed repair facility to do it I'm sure.
Doesn't mean you can't. It is a simple process. Getting under the car is the hardest part.

If I unplug the electrical connector and test drive it and it drives without any issues would tell for sure it's the lockup solenoid?
If you unhook the electrical plug to the trans, everything should work EXCEPT lock up.
If you disconnect the electrical from the trans everything will work except lock up. It will not tell you if the solenoid is bad or not. this is why we tie into the circuit to see if the signal is being interrupted.
Assuming there are no wires that got pinched during install and this problem started once you put this trans in, I would assume the problem is in the trans, wiring or solenoid. This is an assumption.

After finally talking with Monster they told me to unplug the electrical connector to see what the lockup would do. When shifting from 3-4...there was no more RPM jumping or hunting...it would just stay idling high...at 50mph the RPMs are at 2500..half of redline. So now I'm once again waiting on Monster to call me back after leaving 3 messages. What do you guys think?

check brake switch & brake switch adjustment. perhaps it is intermittent causing lock up to disengage and then reengage. lock up appears to be working, but it is not holding. could be faulty lockup solenoid.
Would a bad VSS cause lockup problems?
