T5 Transmissions Question

Starting in 1993, GM began using Ford cases on their T5 transmissions. For this reason the 1993+ transmissions cannot use SBC bell housings.

In spite of this detail, the 4th gen T5s after 1995 have 26 spline input shafts. It occurred to me that adding a $300 G-force GM pattern case to a 93+ transmission should adapt it to use a SBC bolt pattern and give it a stronger case in the process (a point of weakness in all T5s).

Does this sound like it could be a good strategy?

Re: T5 Transmissions Question

G-force does have a Muncie pattern case (it's not well advertised) and it would work for the world class V6 4th gen T5.

The 4th gen V6 T5 has a slightly longer input shaft and still doesn't have a 2.95 first gear (V8 third gen) gearset; it's the weaker V6 gearset.

Would I put a Gforce case into a V6 T5 for a V8 application? Not when I can get a V8 unit.

Re: T5 Transmissions Question

Yeah, the 2.95 first gear in the V8 third gen unit is a definite bonus. After doing some research, I found the input shaft measurements (as measured from trans case face to shaft tip):
88-92 V8 is 6.71 inches
96+ V6 is 7.17 inches
(0.46 inch difference)

I wonder if swapping the shorter input shaft into a 96+ would be possible (after adding the g-force case).

Re: T5 Transmissions Question

More than likely, a third gen input would work if the gear tooth count matched.

And the 14 spline would still be stronger than a 10 spline Ford input.

Re: T5 Transmissions Question

I think another possible move could be to use a blank T5 adapter plate from Mcleod:

And have it machined to adapt the 96+ Camaro-Ford case to a SBC Muncie pattern. At the proper width, it could offset the extra length of the 96+ 26 spline input shaft.
