Awful vibration if clutch is released fast... smooth as butter if slow?
83 with a 2.8
Replaced my clutch with a Luk 04-069 (standard replacement) and had the flywheel resurfaced.
If I try and shift quick (releasing the clutch fast) while driving I have an awful vibration.
If I let the clutch out slow and smooth like a big ol' dump truck it'll drive perfectly!
Did I not align something right?
Maybe the clutch needs adjustment?
Can't be normal!

First suspect would be pilot bushing (or bearing , whichever it happens to use) . Even if the pilot bushing WAS replaced when the clutch was , if the machined end of the input shaft where the bushing rides is worn to any appreciable amount , it will have the same effect as a worn out bushing would .
Tell me , the whole car , everything including the dashboard (and everything else !) shakes really badly , right till the clutch is fully engaged , and then it goes away when the clutch IS fully engaged , yes ? If so it's just about certain to be what I think it is ...... Thread Starter

Yeah the pilot bearing was new with the clutch kit. The input shaft looked fine but who knows. Bearing could have failed prematurely too.
The vibration isn't enough to shake the whole car, just a driveline vibration.
If I release the clutch slow and smooth it doesn't vibrate at all throughout the clutch movement (floor to fully released).
If I release the clutch quickly (not shift quickly, just talking clutch here) the car will do it.
Would a bad pilot bearing always show symptoms or does this sound like that could be the culprit?

Will it also vibrate when you accelerate hard?

First things I would question other than the pilot are the surfaces.
Was the flywheel resurfaced by someone reputable? Was the surface verified flat (vs. concave or convex) once done?
Was the clutch disc clean and uncontaminated by greasy stuff?
Did you attempt to set or verify an airgap measurement from bearing to PP fingers before trans. install?

As long as I let the clutch out smoothly it doesn't vibrate regardless of throttle or RPM.
Flywheel was resurfaced by a local shop. Interesting angle... didn't think of that.
Clutch disk and pressure plate were clean, yes.
Not sure what you mean by the airgap?

Did you convert to hydaulic?
Mechanical setups commonly are set to a clearance measurement between PP fingers and throwout bearing. Most of the common GM RWD passenger car setups do fine with something basic like 0.050"

Ahhh, bet that's it.
No, I'm still rocking the linkage. Is there a proper adjustment procedure? Last time I asked that on the forums here they all just said no do it by feel... which apparently wasn't right!

Re: Awful vibration if clutch is released fast... smooth as butter if slow?
I had a clutch taht would have a vibration in 4th gear on T56. If I shifted from 3rd to 4th really aggressively it would sometimes have a driveline vibration. I could put the clutch back in and back out and it would go away. I basically had a 1/3 chance of having the same vibration in fourth gear every time I got off the clutch. I still have no idea what that was about. It doesnt do it anymore so it must be clutch related since I've changed the clutch since then.
Either way, I would just put the clutch back in and back out to "fix" it.
