Hey guys. Been a member for almost 5 years and never asked a question so searching really does work (at least %99 of the time haha). Anyways, I recently bought an adjustable Spohn torque arm for a t56 swap and although it is well constructed there seems to be a problem. It produces a terrible clunk/thud when I let off the throttle after a hard pull. I have the drive shaft loop by the way.
I am going to check for drive shaft loop interference with the transmission tunnel soon but I also came across this thread:
From what I read, this thread says the shank of the bolts that come with the arm to connect the front rotator plates to the transmission is not quite long enough to make full contact with the rotator plate which produces a "thudding" on hard pulls. The thread seems good but there are no longer pictures or measurements.
Does anyone have measurements to the bolts that will correct the thudding? Any tips? From what I've read, it's not a failure point but it is very annoying.
Thanks for all the help over the years Thirdgen, you da best <3
Took some time but I have the original bolt measurements. The bolt itself looks to be a 5/8-11 about 3-3/16" long. I took lots of pictures.
The diameter of the thread compared to the shank is different, but not by much. I guess it doesn't take much slop to make a noise when you're moving 3K+ lbs of assorted metals.
Mine still clunky...
I'm considering the BMR that uses a stock (ish) poly busing, no links, etc...
but I read someone had issues with the trans cross member and alston SFC's which I got ....
Coincidentally I just finished the job about 30 min ago. Took it for a ride and got on it pretty hard. It's definitely a LOT better than it was before, but there are still some noises. The funny thing is that it didn't sound like it was coming from the transmission tunnel anymore, sounded further back.
My car has been sitting a while and the test drive got cut short due to a state trooper (it's not registered atm lol). Once this semester is over (4/28) I'll have the car on the road and then I'll pinpoint the noise a little better.
I have a buddy with a go-pro, maybe I'll get some footage of this thing working on a launch or something. Anyways, I don't regret doing it as it made a big difference. I have some pics below. I'll keep ya posted.
I ended up cutting the bolts that I got from the link I posted too short so I did some asking around and found a great hardware store with grade 8 bolts. Apple industrial supply in Ft. Pierce, Florida rocks. The bolts from the link would have worked also and used one less spacer washer, but these were only $1.25 a piece.
Spacer washers
I ground the bolt to a good length for clearance.
Here is the shank sticking through. Nicee
All installed
It ended up close to the fuel lines, but it clears just fine.
