Mechanical to Electric Speedo

I have an 1986 Camaro Sport Coupe with 383 Stroker & 700r4 Tranny. It has a mechanical speedo and I bought "New Vintage USA 1967 Series" which are electric. I just want to double check and make sure these are the parts I need to convert the mechanical to electric. Will I need any other parts besides these or no.

Re: Mechanical to Electric Speedo

If you have no ECM, you can use just about whatever VSS you want 4,000 pulse/mile or higher. Those gauges are okay with square or sine wave and self calibrate. So you wouldn't need the SGI-5 Dakota box.

If using an 80's third gen ECM, you'll need something to cut down the signal to 2,000 PPM; the Dakota can do that. 1980s fireirds and TBI 90s models did it with a VSS buffer.

Okay, I believe its the original ecm I bought this car last year and don't think the previous owner change any of that stuff. So thats the part I only need to get my gauges to work.

Maybe not; I edited my post.

The stock 86 speedometer has an optical VSS that feeds the ECM and cruise.

In short, you will need the Dakota. Or a VSS buffer setup like used in 80s model third gens and TBI models.

Re: Mechanical to Electric Speedo

Sorry, no; that was my suggestion if you were feeding speedo only; you have an ECM.

I can't find anything that says what pulses the New Vintage USA sender puts out. Jegs has a knockoff of it for $5.00 less: http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...41610/10002/-1

That plus the DD SGI-5 C would work for you.

Per the Dakota Dig. manual Application 5 http://www.dakotadigital.com/pdf/sgi-5c.pdf , you'll use output 5 for 2000 pulse per mile switches (square wave) to ECM, and output 3 for 4000 pulse per mile to speedo, or output 1 for 8000 pulse per mile to speedo. The manual for your speedo didn't make it sound like it mattered.
