Found bad news when looking for oil leakage

I found this tore-up looking hole last night when looking for an oil leakage recently discovered. Can this happen without me noticing??

Perhaps I should add that the car was just picked up from a workshop when the oil leakage was discovered. They changed the starter. Could this in any way be connected to some simple garage mistake?

Bad luck uhh...

Thats just a dust/splash shield and not the source of your leak. I have ran cars for years without them with no ill effects.
You probably have a rear main leaking or a leak near where your oil pressure sender goes.

Like Ramlt said... That hole is not a prob. Just the torque converter dust cover. I have not had one on any of my older cars, every.

Okay, thanks for calming me down. Yes, probably engine leaking by rear main. The cover can be changed without taking down the tranny, right?

Re: Found bad news when looking for oil leakage

Yep you sure can. Just a few small bolts holding it to the trans. In your picture, if you look at the oil filter top, and look to the right you can see 1 of the bolts.

Once you have all of the bolts off, the cover will pull pretty much straight down
