Cam/Stall question

Im almost done with my 383 build. It will be a daily driver. the cam I went with has an rpm range of 2500-6000. My highway cruising speed is about 2500 rpm. Ive heard that you want a stall speed of aroundt 400 rpm higher than starting range of your cam but no higher than highway cruising speed. so... which is more important and will I hurt anything by going with say a.... 2000 stall? any recommendations other than that? 1990 IROC 700r4 trans 3.27 gears. I know everyone is going to tell me to get different gears but Id rather avoid that for now

Re: Cam/Stall question

2000 stall is barely a stall at all. 2400-2800 is good for a street build. With what you have described loosely id say 2800 would be better suited. 327 isn't a bad gear with a 700R4 because the 1-2 shift is pretty good in that tranny.

so my highway cruising RPMs... not a big deal to have the stall speed higher than that?

Re: Cam/Stall question

if you get a 'lock-up' converter it wont matter what your cruise RPMs are, as the converter will lock and be 1:1.

most factory late model vehicles have nearly a 2k stall stock. if it were me, i would get an advertised 3k stall. BUT---stall RPMS change with torque, heat, and quality.

I bought my converter from him, great guy and full of wisdom. He's going to ask you for cam, intake, head, and other engine specs so be prepared with all of that upfront.

It's like the difference between starting out in 3rd gear vs starting out in 1st gear.
