700R4 trans barely pulling
Ok folks, after reading and searching for quit i while I'm giving up and starting a thread. I'm the proud onwer of a 88 Iroc-Z, tpi is gone and carb put in its place. My problem is my trans. It's a 700R4 and I was on my way home from work and heard a slight thump from my trans. When I say slight, i probably wouldn't have paid it any attention accept for the fact that it barely pulls now. It pulled just enought for me to get it off on the shoulder. Any suggestions, it's my daily driver and I'm on a pretty tight budget.

1. Does it act this way in all forward ranges?
2. Does it act this way in reverse?
3. If it does move, does it shift through all the gears?
4. TPI to carb swap - was a TV cable correction kit installed at the carb linkage?
5. Check to see if that the TV cable is still attached to the carb linkage.

I really can't tell you if it will shift out of 1st about 3 mph is all she's got and that is flat on the floor. It acts this way in all ranges Reverse, Drive, 1 and 2. The carb is off the motor because while it is down with trans problems, I've got to put in some valve seals and front and rear mains. As for the the TV cable, it was there but unsure if you would call it "proper". I bought the Z 2 years ago for 700 bucks and this is the first bit of trouble I've had except for an extremely wore out stearing column which I replaced within the first couple months of ownership.

Have you pulled the pan on the trans yet? Sounds like you'll need a rebuild and make sure the TV cable is setup properly on the carb this time.

I have not GeneralDisorder. The trans is abotu ready to come out though. Bell housing bolts, flex plate, and two crossmember bolts. I work long hours and don't have as much time as i'd like to give to this project unfortunately. The trans fluid is burnt smelling and blackish.

Yeah that's a bad sign on the fluid condition. Sounds like it needs a rebuild for sure. Check around your area - craigslist, etc. There's lots of 700R4's out there for any budget. Used, rebuilt, and upgraded. I got a race built trans with only a few months of use that would have cost $2500 from Monster, TCI, etc for $1000 recently. Loving it.
