Torque converter stall

Alright guys, need some opinions. I need a different torque converter for my build. Right now I have the ACC Boss Hog 22-2800 stall, lock up converter on my 700r4. It has a B&M shift kit set up for Street and strip. Engine is a 355 Vortec TPI with GMPP LT4 hotcam with 1.5 roller rockers for .492/.492.

The car is hard to get going from a stop and bogs down and then roars to life, and when I'm cruising at speeds under 60-70 mph, the car bucks and pulls really hard if you're on the throttle easy, as in at those speeds you either have to be on it or not at all.

Obviously I know I need a higher stall, but how much higher? Given the popularity of the engine and transmission set up I have, I figure someone on here would know what stall I need to get, or give a good recommendation of something that they've had that worked good. And if it helps, right now the car has its factory 3.23 open gears, but I eventually would like to do a 3.73 posi for it. Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Torque converter stall

I have a 2800 non locker in my 86 TPI. 3.70 gears. I have none of these problems. Mine leaps off the line and it's a great stall speed for the car. I would probably even go with a 3k stall. Mine came with my barely used built trans (guy bought a vette) and so I just used it.

I think you have tuning or other issues, not your converter.

Re: Torque converter stall

The reason I'm pretty sure the stall is too low is because you can feel it lock up, even in third under light acceleration, and when it goes into fourth it bogs down really bad until it can finally overcome it at a higher speed and be alright, but the whole time its slowly gaining speed it bucking and jolting like crazy. Also, when putting the car in drive or reverse, it bogs the engine down a lot. So much so that having your foot on the brake when you do it sometimes causes it to stall out.

I know that the off the line problem could be attributed to bad timing, but I had it on the timing light yesterday and it's set to 6* BTDC just the way the hood says, the manual says, and Scott Hansen told me to set it at when he did my custom tune for it.

Re: Torque converter stall

Well your converter could be bad, but it's not the stall speed that's causing these symptoms. Lockup is controlled by the engine computer. It should not stall when you put it in gear. The stock converter is like 1800 rpm stall or some such silly thing and it doesn't cause any stalling when you put it in gear.

I would say the converter is probably shot. Can't say if the trans would live through that or not. What's the fluid look like? Have you pulled the pan recently?

Re: Torque converter stall

Something is definitely not right then. Try unplugging the TCC connection on the trans. Maybe it's locking when it shouldn't be? Maybe talk to Scott about the tuning? I have a tune from him for my 305 and it was there before and after my trans swap (stock to built w/2800 stall) and it worked fine with both. My trans ate itself just from age (150k) and probably abusive driving. The pump gave out. But it had sat for 11 years prior to me beating on it.
