700 r4 weird issue

Ok , need some help but a little history first. Have 86 iroc-z with a 350 in place of stock 305. Bought used monster 700r4 from neighbor that was less than a year old with very few miles on it. 3500 stall, motor producing around 350 up. Everything worked fine at first then after driving less than 500 miles, started acting up. It shifts and drives fine for 10 minutes then nothing, no forward or reverse. Can turn car off and start it right back up and it will work fine for a few minutes and then same problem. Changed filter and fluid last week, seemed to help for about four days( not much driving , son back and forth to school and around town). Now back to same problem again. Fluid level good( not discolored or burnt at change) and TV cable installed and adjusted properly. Any ideas?

Hhhhmmm:

Sounds like it's junk to me.

Find a good local builder. Demand Sonnax parts. Very happy with mine via this method.

Before you go farther get a 0-300psi gage and hook it to the line pressure to on the left side of the case it's a 1/8" pipe thread plug see what happens to line pressure when driving. If line pressure drops look to the pump and supply of line pressure stays in spec then you have an internal oil leak either seals or broken parts

Re: 700 r4 weird issue

When you changed the filter, what did you see on the bottom of the pan away from the magnet? Did you see a fine layer of clutch material in the pan? If you did, then this is what is making the transmission act up as the clutch material is causing the filter to collapse. If there is no or little clutch material on the bottom of the pan, then it is possible to have a bad filter that is causing this, especially with the "no name" filters from China. It is somewhat rare, but I have seen this occur.

Re: 700 r4 weird issue

The pan and magnet were clean, filter wasn't stopped up. Pulled transmission last night, pump tangs were intact, suspect stall converter failed, going to dig deeper after work today. My son said when it acted up he could turn car off and restart it. If idle was high, car wouldn't go. If idle was normal, it would work again for a bit. Thanks for replying.

Re: 700 r4 weird issue

Hello, been awhile dealing with this issue. Anyways, come to find out it was an original monster that had been rebuilt cheaply somewhere along the line. Had good foundation but pump, clutches and band were cheapo replacements. Took it to pro in Dallas and now all his good. Thanks for replies and hope this sucker lasts awhile.
