That's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. Lead is too soft for that. The gears are going to work loose and then start breaking chunks of lead off. If a chunk gets stuck between the ring & pinion it's going to lock up the rear end and cause a huge crash. Just my opinion.

More than likely the lead will just creep out in flakes and shards and the ring and pinion will crush it into dust. I don't think a chunk of lead is capable of locking up the axle any more than a broken-off steel tooth can. I am not sure that the molten lead idea is very sound engineering though. A few minutes with a MIG welder is probably a faster and even cheaper solution.
