T5 grinds in 2nd and 3rd

Hey guys I don't know really anything about transmissions so any input here would be appreciated. I have a 91 GTA with a T5 and second and third gear grind horribly only while fully engaged. I have no issues going in to the gears, nor do they ever pop out but just the grind sounds awful. Also, when I hit a bump it effect the harshness of the noise as if something's loose and moving around. I don't have a ton of money to throw around so if there are simple or common issues with these transmissions then fire away!

Thanks

IF it changes when you hit a bump sounds like something is loose. Time to pull the transmission and see whats up

Re: T5 grinds in 2nd and 3rd

The bearing at the front of the countershaft tends to wear the bore in the case. If you have a leak up front, that is probably happening.
Also, if the front end of the mainshaft is poorly supported by worn bearings, it will spread away from the countershaft and the poor meshing of the 2 and 3 speed gears with the countershaft will make noise.
Another V8 T5 will get you by. Save up for an upgrade if the car is a keeper.

Do you think it's worth it to just have the gears rebuilt or to try and find another T5? I have the original WC and appearently they're tough to come by

Hard to say without taking it out and seeing what the damage is. If your case is messed up you can get a better upgraded one from gforce for about $300
