700r4 auto wont come out of park help

so I think I know the problem, can I get a sanity check?
rebuilt engine 350 attached to a previously working 700r4.
Modification to 700r4:
non-lockup 2600 converter
pump ball per directions removed
new engine has not been fired up yet, no trans fluid yet

- mated the engine and trans after a new filter was installed.
- set trans into park at trans, set car into park and installed orig shift cable
- shifted into neutral, rocked car back and forth to move, heard clunking below (im guessing ujoint clunking) but car would not roll back
- dropped pan, verified parking pawl is indeed disengaging and working freely
- verified at trans shift bracket moves through all gears

my thoughts is that this will need the trans fluid in and engine fired up to spin up the fluid and free everything. even though the parking pawl is working freely. Only other test would be to drop the ujoint and try to spin it. thoughts? could this just need to be spun up with fluid to get everything working again?

Re: 700r4 auto wont come out of park help

Trans shouldn't need fluid to spin. Especially if it was previously run the frictions should have some lubrication already. If you do pull the drive shaft you should be able to spin it by hand. It's normal for it to be a bit more difficult to run in one direction than the other. You didn't have the parking brake on did you?
