1987 Iroc trans problems

Long story short. Adjusted TV cable according to instructions at www.tvmadeez.com. I did this because the car wouldn't go into reverse and there was a weird noise coming from trans area. so i test drive the car and it shifts into reverse, goes into drive fine, seems to shift through gears ok, cruise down to a gas station about a mile away, on the way back cruising in drive, rpm's are going up trans starts slipping again..go to turn around reverse won't work.....almost got stuck in the middle of the road barely made it home....my guess is the transmission is done? any one had a similar problem?

Just asking so don't take offense, but did you check the fluid level while hot in park? Do you have any leaks?

Re: 1987 Iroc trans problems

Well because I'm assuming you have a 30+ year old transmission, you might want to try a bottle of transmission reconditioner. Now this would only be a temporary fix if it even works at all. The old seals get brittle and don't seal anymore. The fix in a bottle may soften them up some, but it can also turn the seals to mush after time. Either way, if you have the TV cable adjusted right and the fluid full, it probably is in need of a rebuild. But it's something you can try. And one more thing, when was the last time the fluid and filter has been changed?

So, before your TV adjustment your car would NOT go into reverse. After, it would go into reverse but not second? Did it go into 2nd before the TV cable adjustment?

Had you recently changed the fluid?

Do you know what fluid is in there?
