Ideas Welcome, 700R4 Reverses in Park

Hi, I just want to say ahead of time thank you to anyone for looking or responding.

The background: 1988 Firebird with a 700R4. The transmission is a new rebuilt unit from Jegs that is about a year old, it also has a Dana Probuilt shift kit.

The car has run and driven fine now for over a year, no shifting issues. Recently I went to put the car in park and immediately noticed that the car now reverses in park.

The car still runs and drives fine aside from the fact that I now do not have park. (the car will still turn off and start when the gear selector is in the park position)

It shifts up and down through all the forward gears perfectly when driving around. You can also feel each individual click when you move the shifter between 1st, 2nd, Drive, Overdrive, and Neutral. Then things get weird, from Neutral to Reverse it feels extra long, then it goes into Reverse.(Reverse functions like it should). then you go to move the shifter into Park, it clicks into park but instead of Parking it acts like a second Reverse.

Fluid level is fine, and I checked the shift linkage and visually it all appears to be normal.

Thoughts?

Sounds like as cable adjustment problem to me. Probably not operating the gear select lever far enough to reach park.

Disconnect the cable and see if you can manually go further into the park position.
