What is a M-40 transmission?

I have a transmission that is a Turbo-Hydra Matic that came with a Chevy 350ci engine, the tranny tag says M40. Is that the type of transmission? Kind of like the 700r4 is also known as 4L60. The pan is somewhat rectangular, but I don't think it's a 700r4. So if anyone can help me identify it. I think it came out of a 70's Chevy truck.

Rectangular pan? I think if you look it is more mushroom shaped, with a Modulator sticking out the right side of it right? It is a Turbo 400.
