A guy has a set of new 3.73 gears and installation kit for 10 bolt 7.5. Talking to him on the phone he sounded older and said the box doesn't have a part number and he could only see a few random numbers stamped in the gears. I do believe them to be 10 bolt 7.5 3.73 gears.
My only concern about the gears is if they are for a 2 series or 3 series carrier. I have a 3 series carrier.
Is there any visual way to tell if the gears are for a 2 or 3 series carrier? The only other information I got from him is that he put a tape measure on the ring gear and it measured 1.5" from the flat mounting surface to a tip of one of the teeth on the inside of the ring.
I would go have a look but he is 2.5 hours away. I am going to that city in a week and a half and it would still be a hour round trip to go see him. I wouldn't want to waste my time.
The flange on the carrier for the ring is .400" farther away from the pinion CL in a 2 series carrier than a 3 series.
2 series on the left, 3 on the right.
The "thick" gears have a "taller" section between the flange and the teeth, by that much. "Thick" 3.73s are about ¾" tall or so at that spot. The gears in the pic that are still on the 2 series carrier are I believe (don't know, it's not my pic, I just ganked it off of some unsuspecting fleabay seller or something) 2.73, which are only slightly thinner than "normal" 3.73s on a 3 series carrier.
Sounds to me like they're the "thick" version. Butt I could easily be wrong. And not only wRong, but possibly mistaken on that particular point.
