I am putting a LS in my 1960 Ford F250 4x4 and am wanting to keep the Ford T-98 4 speed. Does anyone know who makes an adapter for this? They make one for a Jeep T98 but not Ford.
What exactly needs adapted? Who are "they"? What does the Cheeeeep adapter look like?
There are 5 things, really: pilot dia, clutch gear bearing retainer flange dia, clutch gear length, trans/BH bolt pattern, a throwout the right height with the right inner dia to fit the clutch gear bearing retainer. Tackle em one at a time. Some convenient steel bell housing, with the trans pattern drilled into it, might work with no "adapter" at all.
I am just getting started on this project trying to run down what I need to get in order to use the T-98 with the LS 5.3. I dont have the old engine out of my truck yet. Here is both the Jeep and the ford t98 bolt patterns Advanced says they make one for the Jeep t98 but not the ford t98. Cani i just make an adapter for the old ford t98 bellhousing to fit the LS motor? I am capable to do that and have the proper tools. Or do I neeed to get a chevy steel bellhousing for the ls and then fit the t98 to it? I believe i have the clutch pressure plate assembly figured out for it to work with the t98. youtube link for that here
The clutch gear bearing retainer looks to be a very different size on those 2 transmissions. Also the clutch gear looks to be MUCH longer on the Cheeeeep unit. So, no, I don't think you can use its setup.
Cani i just make an adapter for the old ford t98 bellhousing to fit the LS motor?
Maybe. Would depend on whether the crank pilot and the clutch splines are a suitable distance from the plane of the BH flange, and whether you can get a clutch disc that has the right splines, to fit and work inside the 5.3 clutch. After all, if the 5.3 crank pilot is already too far away from the trans for the trans pilot to reach it, then adding an adapter will just make it that much worse.
