Question on the T-5
Question on the T-5
I am interested in buyin a 89 IROC with the 305 and a 5-speed and am wonderin how much power this transmission can handle and if there where any differences between the trannys like any heavy duty ones?
Search the boards, you will find answers to your questions. There were two types of T5s for camaros, non-world class and world class. Obviousy the latter is the stronger of the two. Heavy Duty is what FORD called the different T5s they put into mustangs.

A World Class T-5 can handle 400 HP - 400 LbFt if it is in good condition - AND if it is not abused. It CANNOT handle wheel pulling launches on drag slicks.
For a hot street car with a hot 350 - on street tires - a W.C. T-5 can live a long and happy life - but you can't abuse it. No power shifting. And take care of it. Regular fluid changes are important. Also the countershaft bearing stabilizer from Medatronics (www.gearzone.net) is a great idea.
If you want to bolt on slicks and make regular appearances at the strip - the T-5 is not the best choice for a transmission.
It all depends on what you want to do with the car.
The World Class was first used in the 88 F-Bodys - and it is the stronger, better shifting T-5. The older non W.C. T-5s were not very strong - and even a good 305 is too much for them.

I run a very stong 350 ( 340 hp\365 ftlbs TQ at rear wheels ) with a World Class T5. I autocross, hillclimb and road race the car. ZERO problems whatsoever . I do not Drag Race .
I use the steel billet 5th gear retainer that Karl Mentioned and Pennzoil ATF ( although I am switching to GM's Fluid as an experiment ).
