L03 and L98 700R4 comparison

Are they identical or are there internal differences?

For obvious reasons, L03 autos are a lot easier to find and cheaper than the same tranny attached to a L98, so I need to know what the differences are between the two in stock form.

If they are the same years I believe they are the same. I know that the servos can be different between f-bodies and vetts. I believe that there is an even more low performance servo but I dont think it is used in the f-bodies. That is about all I know.

Basically, the V-8 700R4's from 1988-1991 use pretty much the same parts with some minor differences. The 1992 had some minor & one major improvement over the earlier 1988-1991's. The Corvettes of those years would be the exception to this (shift timing, governor, boost valves, 2nd gear apply servo, etc.). If you are buying a core, then condition would be what matters. The 1992 would be the best to choose from.

What was the one major improvement of the 92s over the 91s that you mention?

Thanks

The input to output shaft seal was changed from plastic to Viton. The plastic would wear fairly quickly (increasing seal to shaft clearance) thereby losing volume to the rear planet. The Viton is soft and will conform to the shaft maintaining a positive seal, therefore less wear. The earlier version 700R4's can be updated with them. In my 700R4 kits and 700R4's that I build, I use them exclusively. The second improvement (sometimes) was they changed the 2nd gear accumulator in the valve body to one that gives smoother part throttle shifts.
