700R4 Wont Downshift.... quite wierd.. help

Okay here's the deal. Sometimes when i'm getting off on the highway or something or coming to a stop I will downshift my auto to like 2 to slow me down. Well now when i put it down a gear it will do nothing. I can be going like 20 mph and if i were to throw it in first before it would obviously downshift to first. Well now it does nothing... not only does it do nothing but it feels like its gone into neutral.. but not normal neutral. Say i'm going 20 or 25 or 30 which the selector in first.. (this is after I 'manuallly downshift).. you can rev the motor like its in neutral.. but once it hits the RPM that will.. connect... with the motor.. it will start to pull.... then you let off the gas and the motor spools down again.. back to idling RPM...Also, if i leave it in D or OD it will drive just fine.. go through the gears... all smooth. And if I say start off in first.. it will hold the gear. But its just the downshifting that's not happening.... umm.. i think that the best that I can describe the problem.... I wont be back till monday to check this so keep the ideas floating.... and if you guys think the tranny is toast then please tell me.. perfect opportunity for the T5 or T56 swap. Thnx guys....

p.s.-- fluid full... reverse is fine.. umm.. thats all i can think of.. thnx again

You have either broke (or it is wornout) the input sprag or hub, or the overrun clutches are gone. The transmission has to come out to fix it. How many miles are on this unit? You might do the updates while it is down.

Hmmm..... sounds like some pretty decent damage... anyway... like I said it's fine it Drive and OD... how long do I have with it you think? Its got about 110,000 miles on it.. not the easiest of miles I assume. Thnx guys.. and don't worry about being the bearer of bad news.... T-5 or T-56 will be on the way soon.

Do not use manual one or two and let off the gas where it feels like neutral. You are loading & unloading the sprags when doing this & something can break. If you use manual one or two, make sure you do not let off of the gas (use on constant acceleration only). It might last awhile.

Alright then.. thanks for the news guys. Did my 'manual' shifting of the auto cause these parts to break/wear out? Or is this something that goes bad over time anyway. I"m just wondering how bad it really is to manually shift an automatic.... downshifting, holding each gear, etc... how bad is that kind of stuff to an automatic? Just for future knowledge.
