7 5/8 and 7 1/2 rearend question

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anyone know if the ring gears are the only things that are different or if the carrier is different also. The reason I ask is that I have a open 7.5 rear from an s10 with 4.10 and a 7.625 rear from a camaro with posi. I just wanted to use the posi carrier from the camaro in the s10 rear if possible.

Thanks

Ring gears are the same. Carriers are the same, except for the side gears inside them being either 26 or 28 splines. I have no idea why people think there's 2 different sizes; they all use the same gears from 78 to 2002, in A, B, F, and G body cars, and S trucks and Astro vans and maybe other vehicles I can't recall.

So, your posi will work IF both rear ends came with the same splined axles.

Thanks for the quick response. I just assumed they could be different cause the rp from my camaro was marked 7 5/8 and I knew my s10 was 7.5. I guess I will try and change it now that you gave me some incentive.

Does anyone know if it will be a dirrect swap or if I need to re-shim the carrier. I've never done it before.

There are different size ring gears. They are 7 1/2 and 7 5/8. I believe that they changed at the same time or close to the same time as they went from 26 to 28 spline axles. If you have 7 1/2 ring gear, you probably have the 26 spline axles. You will probably have to get some 28 spline axles to be able to use the posi.

Okay, I worked on it today and found that the camaro rear must have been a 2 series while the s10 was a 3 because the ring gear was about 1/4" too far from the pinion. Other than that it did fit wih no problem and the 7 5/8 had 26 spline side gears so at least the axles fit. Do they make a ring gear spacer for this application?

I've seen plenty of spacers for that purpose, but never one for a 7.5 inch rear. Surely somebody makes one. Since you moved the carrier from housing to another, you may need to do some shimming.

There are spacers available. You can also buy special extra-thick gears.

There is no difference between the "7.5" and "7-5/8" gears. Look them up in the books, or take some rear ends apart; you'll find they're all the same from 78 to 02, and they probably will continue to be the same as long as GM keeps on using that model of rear end.
