ok, I think I can pick up my brothers 94 grand am for about 500 bucks,.

the problem is, the car is a 5 speed manual, however, the car has lost 1st and 2nd gear, and reverse grinds,the car is driveable, but its just nofun when u start out in 3rd gear.

the engine is the quad 4 if it helps

what is the problem here? is it an easy fix?

 

Reverse grind could be the clutch is toast and not disenguaging. If the syncro's are worn for 1st and 2nd(partially from the clutch problem) it won't go into those gears. Just a possibility. Start with the clutch first. If you stil have tranny problems, I would just get a used junk-yard tranny for cheap.
