rear end gears make whining sound
rear end gears make whining sound
i have a 5 speed manual 1992 RS with with stock 3.42 gears.
for the past week and a quarter my car has been sitting in my driveway, today i started it up and warmed the engine, so i took it out for a drive. I was on the highway goinclose to 70mph, then i let off the gas and let the car drift foreward, and the gears made a whining sound. it never made this sound before,
i was worried that mabie there was a seal leaking oil,
and was scared that the rearend would either burnup the gears, or the gears would lock.
so i took her righ home and parked her. What do you think happened and how can i fix my problem? did that ride cause perminant damage to my rear?
ps if it will need replacement later on, or now, how much would a decent posi unit be... i was thinking around a 3.73 gears

Just check the fluid levels in both the tranny and differential. If you can't remember the last time/if at all you put in new fluid, now is a good time.
SLP sells a takeoff posi for under $100 bucks. A new set of gears about twice as much. Add more for the installation kit and labor (unless you know how to do this).
BTW I assume you have a V-6 since the V-8's came stock with a 3.08 gear

You should be able to find it on their website...under specials or clearance items.
Or you could call them.

dear friend.
it happened to me a few years ago, ended up buyng a set of gears from a scrapyard, only to find upon disassembly that the problem was only:
the nut that adjust the input shaft to the diff. it was loose that was all.
just remove the back side of the driveshaft, and check for play, there should be no play.
what i did was to rent an electric powered impact gun, with the respective socket (if i do recall it was 32mm.) tight it and the noise was gone.
with the tools in place this check will take you a good 45 minutes to complete.
Fernando.
