rear end gear help someone!!

i have an 88 26 spline 2.73 (junk) posi rear end gear. i was wondering if there is gonna be any problems switchin to a 3 series gear and if the 2 series 3.73 richmond gears will go in fine without hassels... sad enough right now im on a half way tight budget so im gonna keep the 26 spline and trash the posi idea cuz i really dont benefit greatly from it anyways. im keepin the 700-R4 tranny and was also wonderin what gears should be used the 3.42's or the 3.73's for the two carrier... i know im gonna probaly start an argument over 3.42 or 3.73 but just anyones honest opinion would be greatly appreciated.

you can't put 3 series gears on a 2 series carrier, or vice versa. not really clear on what you're doing or asking, but i hope it clears it up for you.

It realy depends on what you have done to the engine, on what gears you need. I just removed my 373 rearend and installed a 342[ temporily] while I'm rebuilding. Quite a bit of differance in the two. I'm running a comp cams xe268 cam in a tpi engine. It likes the 373s much better, over all. Running 30 mph in town with the 373s is much smoother. From a roll I can't tell much differance. I had richmonds, and they do WINE. I never realized how much untill I put the 342s in. I believe there's more companys than richmond, that make the gear you're after.

If the posi is OK, just install some 2 series 3.73's. Install won't be too bad, you may not need to change any shims since you will still be running the same carrier and housing. I'm running 2 series 3.73's.

im in IL, im megadeth freak, and AZ(Mustaine)

gear and carrier swaps arent one of the easier things to do to an axle of GM's design, IE unremoveavle center section like on ford 9" axles

have fun....!
