Transgo Kit Install question
Transgo Kit Install question
Hi all,
I started installing the full Transgo kit today. Was VERY surprised to find my 2nd accumulator spring was broken into THREE pieces!!! How did that affect the transmission's performance? How did it happen? Is that what was causing the slow, slipping shifts from 1-2 and 2-3?
It's an '84 700R4 without an aux. valve body and has 1st type valve body. Tranny has 127000 miles and fluid was good.
Thanks,
Greg

Okay, I did a search on "broken accumulator spring" and found out that it should make the 1-2 shift bang hard. So NOW my question is: Given that it should have been banging into second but was really slipping into 2nd, after the Transgo reprogramming kit install, will this condition go away or is my tranny ready for a full rebuild?
I do NOT have a good feeling about this!

You are probably well ahead of most guys if you have an early 4L60 and have that kind of mileage. As for the broken accumulator spring can't say I seen or heard of this. However since the accumulator is only there to prevent fluid shock and provide a smoother transition I would not worry about it. Has the box ever been done to your knowledge? If not, then there is no doubt I would consider a complete overhaul in my not too distant future. I spoke with a friend who is the local guru and he seems to think that a kit on a box with that many miles is probably a mistake. It will most likely accelerate whatever is beginning to get tired. Transgo is a very good kit by the way, most of the better shops in the area all agree on that. LOL, Danno 89 rock, 5.7

Ever get that thing in the back of your mind. Pulled the GM TSB's and found some additional info for you. There is a bulletin about the accumulator. Gm suggests to look at the piston and spring. If it an aluminum piston with a round spring they suggest service using GM part#24204495. Although I have never seen a broken spring, I remembered something about the piston binding. You are right though, should have snapped your neck. Don't overlook the TV valve cable adjust, or possibly a worn TV boost valve. They were another problem with these boxes and will give a real sloopy shift if worn. Danno

The TV cable was already adjusted correctly, as per Leo's instructions.

Greg, let me know how you make out. I am curious to see if it corrects your problem. I replaced 4 parts in my box, got the numbers from the GM perf. catalogue. Used the vette servo etc. I did nothing with the valve body, only enlarged two(I think) holes in the seperator plate. At the advice of a trans guy I played around with the TV cable adj. and got a pretty decent shift. Took a little fiddling, the adjust is pretty fine but it seems pretty firm. LOL, Dan
