700R4 question..
How far can i push a 700R4 tranny, i will be rebuilding it for more strength but i was just wondering how fast some of use r goin with that tranny and if it has any limitations, i building a hot 383 and i would like to keep the tranny in there and just get a performance rebuild but this kid i know was questioning it and said he's heard there weak, but i've heard there good and strong, i've seen a 93 Z28 goin 9's in the quarter with one, so whatz ur guyz experience with it and what do u think??
There are a few of them in the nine's but not many. I have a few in the upper 10's & low 11's doing ok. The torque converter is the biggest single improvement you can do to help these units live. 550 horsepower is about tops without the sleeved input drum, with this 650 horsepower seems to be the limit with any kind of durability. If I can be of help, let me know?

well, maybe i should tell u my plans and u can give me some advice as to how to handle it.. my plans r to build a 383, i'm starting with a 4bolt main 350 block, i'm putting in complete forged bottom, forged steel crank, forged pistons, forged connecting rods, chromoly push rods, roller cam & lifters, Motown 220cc Lite heads, and for an intake a tpis mini-ram, 58mm TB, etc, etc.. i would like the motor to be approx. 500hp, if its a bit less like 450 thats fine but i'm shooting for 500, thats the plan for this winter, the following year i'm going to add onto this setup an ATI supercharger with twin intercoolers.. now tranny? maybe i should stick with the 700r4 for this year and then ditch it the following for a TH400? i do a good amount of drag racing on the weekends but i only want an awesome street car, and i hit up car shows occasionally with my car and show off, however the drag racing isn't goin to be a big thing with this car anymore, more of a street bruiser i think and maybe some drag racing every other week or so, i'll be racing my dads race car from now on so i dont have to beat on mine haha.. the only concern i have at the time is the tranny, i will be replacing my rear end with a ford 9", 373s, 31 spline axles, and new posi unit.. i have the suspension covered also.. Also after the motor is in i will be installing a 6 to 8 point roll cage in the car for stability.. well back to the tranny, what do u suggest..
Mine had taken the abuse pretty well, but I am not pushing 450 horse. I would imagine that my torque is pretty brutal on the sucker and with slicks I know the rear will be the first to go. Like Pro-Built said they are fairly tough when built right and he can help you out in that department for sure. I think with all of my beefing up mine is good for 450 horse so you should be safe with it. Good luck!
